Maplecroft is owned and operated by Caryn Lawrence, whose lifetime career in hospitality led her to purchase this 1887 Victorian home. The house was built by Scottish immigrant George Mackie and lovingly renovated, right down to the circular tower and carved wood trim. Come for friendly hospitality, delicious breakfast, and comfortable Victorian charm.

From the original granite steps it is just a short walk to Main Street Barre, the Vermont History Center, the historic Barre Opera House, the Aldrich Public Library, the historic Old Labor Hall, and the Studio Place Arts gallery and art school.

Where to eat

Main Street Barre is a short walk from our granite steps, with diners, pizzerias, and casual restaurants. Montpelier, about 15 minutes away, has a wider restaurant row and bakeries. Small-town kitchens here often close by 8 or 9pm, so plan dinner early, and note that many restaurants are closed on Mondays or Tuesdays.

Watch out

In fall foliage season (late September to mid October) rooms book out fast across central Vermont. From November through April, Barre gets real winter: carry a snow brush, keep the gas tank half full, and expect unplowed side streets after a storm. Cell coverage can drop on the back roads between quarries.

Safety

Barre is a quiet small town; still, lock your car at trailheads and keep valuables out of sight. Quarry viewpoints and cemetery hills can be slippery after rain, so wear sturdy shoes. In winter, sidewalks on Washington Street can ice over at night.

Getting here

Take I-89 to Exit 7 for Barre, then follow Main Street to Washington Street. Burlington International Airport (BTV) is about an hour north; Boston Logan (BOS) is about 3 hours southeast. If you are driving up from Massachusetts, fill up before the New Hampshire line, where gas prices drop.
